Just look at that Raiders team, both on the field and even on the bench, this team is made up of THE BEST football could ever offer.

The Raiders weren’t even celebrating. It’s almost like they were saying “that’s legal it’s a TD we win that way?”

And that is why only the original ball carrier can recover and/or advance a fumble today!!...lol I think it was just after this game that the Chargers coach resigned and was replaced with Don Coryell

1:52:35 Out of town harbinger score: Pittsburgh beat Seattle 21-10, same teams and score as Super Bowl XL, 27 seasons later.

Paul Warfield sucked as a color commentator and he was teamed with the great jim Simpson.
You can see in this game the foundation of what's to come in SD in the next 5/6 yrs
Don Coryell Enters after week3 and Prothro is canned.
SD would draft Winslow the next yr
trade for chuck muncie.draft James Brooks outta auburn.
                trade Jefferson to GB
The mistake was trading DE fred dean to SF in 1981 they needed him as DT louie Kelcher just wore down from double teams.

SD was a fun team to watch during this air Coryell era.

I was there! It was hotter than hell that day. I was a SAN DIEGO CHARGERS fan, but they went down hill after spanos ruined them. The chargers and the nfl are a piece of crap now

The football gods would even the score later in the year - the Chargers were 2-6 going into the rematch at Oakland while the Raiders were 6-2. The Chargers beat the Raiders 27-23 and both teams ended up finishing 9-7 and missing the playoffs by one game.

Fuckin' cheaters....GO RAIDERS!!! How was it ever legal to advance the ball by virtue of fumbling it forward and in the case of the Raiders, it was pushed forward three times?!?!? Crazy play. They had no choice but to change the rule.

This was supposed to be NBC's secondary game that afternoon, with Miami-Baltimore the primary, but without Bert Jones the Colts were awful and lost 42-0. So most of the country saw Oakland-SD and the unforgettable "Holy Roller" play (which should've been ruled an incomplete forward pass by Stabler and an illegal forward pass by the next Raider, although Oakland might've had time for one more play). The loss kept the Chargers out of the 1978 playoffs. It was the first of 3 straight losses for SD, which got Tommy Prothro fired and replaced by Don Coryell. It's great to hear Jim Simpson's call of this again. He was one of the all-time greats.

The Raiders were more like the Cowboys in that their Super Bowl victories were won by vastly different teams. The only Raiders who got rings for all three SB's (1976, 1980, 1983) were Henry Lawrence, Dave Dalby, Steve Sylvester, Ted Hendricks, Ray Guy and Cliff Branch. Sad that Stabler, Villapiano and Tatum didn't last until 1980 to get a second ring.

I will always look at the teams from this era as the true Raiders. Full of classic characters like Snake, Ghost, Tooz & Madden. I remember always admiring how they would seemingly comeback from every deficit. I cheered for them against everyone...except...I was actually a Dolt fan back then...young, dumb and full of crap LOL

I finally came around to see the light when Plunkett took us to the promised land in 1980 and cemented with the move to LA and the drafting of Marcus Allen - the greatest Raider of all time. Took some time but I have never looked back after I switched to bleed Silver and Black. Raiders4ever!

Simpson points this out (and even Bill King would have agreed).

No, merely an incomplete forward pass. If called that way, it would have left the Raiders with a few seconds for another shot at the end zone. However, it was a very hard play to call. Depending on your angle, it certainly could have looked like an inadvertent fumble. Banaszak also deliberately pushed the ball forward, which was illegal even then, but he timed it so cleverly that it looked like it was caused by the defender. I'm not sure if Casper pushed it forward deliberately or was just trying to get the ball and it happened to go forward. In any case, the referees blew the call, but I can't come down on them too hard because it was very tricky. Now, if this happened today, with HD replay - even with the rule set they had then - it would be fairly easy to figure it out, and there wouldn't be a touchdown.
