trade nylander, sign marner, and get another good defenseman and the leafs can start smelling that cup.
(shoulda never gotten rid of mcelhenny either btw... )

i am a big fan from the uk and dont get the RFA thing, i get the rules i just dont get how its fair for the players. I agree the teams who own the previous contract have first right but imo after a date they should become free agents and able to sign with whom ever they like imo.

@LastResort318 ok I get that but these small maket teams seem to be signing theirs. The 2 major names in the last 2 years have come from what I understand to be the biggest market. If Mitch does not get what he thinks he deserves then he has to sit the year out? Please correct me if that last statement is wrong but it's what I have been led to believe and that's not fair on the player at all.

It’s a way for small market teams to be able to keep their players for at least their prime.

Bad analyst. Signing the offer sheet with the habs guaranteed numbers and length the aho camp wanted. Bergevin was still kicking tires on laine. And no players won’t automatically get paid come December. No gm will panic pay after the Nylander experiment, and if they do they’ll give a 1 year that will hurt the players next contract when they struggle from joining late

Let Marner sit.Save the money and spend it on defence. In the playoffs, defence tightens up.As the play offs move along,it’s more about preventing goals then about scoring goals.
Tired of greedy players and there agents crying for more and more.

Another French Canadian homer who thinks that Dundon was going to not sign the offer sheet for Seppe.

The only number that would've made the Carolina Hurricanes re-think their position on Aho was $10.5m--and it would've been due to the amount of draft picks in return.

The Hurricanes have the 9th highest payroll in the NHL. Dundon isn't stingy at all. He's not Karmanos. He's wealthier than most of the owners in the league. And he's going to spend money while the window is opening for serious Stanley Cup runs.

If Svech and Necas continue to develop, and Mrazek has a season like his last one, look out.

Very interesting to compare the NBA with NHL. NHL players want more money but it seems the league is not financially healthy enough to increase the cap. How does the NBA make so much money?

                                      L Wilmshurst  1 months back

                                      1. NBA gets much more money from TV broadcast rights (esp in US). Go on ESPN.com and look at how far down NHL is vs other sports. It's crazy how little love the NHL gets in the US. People care more about Nascar, college sports etc.

                                      2. NBA has same number of seats in arenas, but a team roster half the size, so even if the total money paid to players by each team was equal between leagues (and it isnt) its concentrated more among fewer players.

So, let me get this straight: Marner scores 4 more goals than he did his previous year but, because he gets 20 more assists (because Tavares is filling the net), he's now magically worth $10.5 million a year after averaging 65 points the previous two years? Got it. Good luck with that contract Toronto. I'd trade his ass in a package for Seth Jones in a heartbeat.

Scott Mallon lol, Toronto fans don’t deserve marner, kid can play 1st line pk, 1st line pp, and 1st line forward for 82 games without injury, he also leads the team in points, if you’re gonna give 11 mil to a guy who can’t play pk and doesn’t play 82 games then you have to give 11 at least to the guy who is doing more, I hope you lose him and he becomes mvp in a city that will give him the respect he deserves

@L Wilmshurst Seth is probably untouchable, but that's one of those deals where you see the surplus of the Leafs (forward skill) and the defecit of CBJ (forward skill), and you think there has to be a match somewhere there.

It may be time for some of these teams to take a hard line with these RFAs and offer what they can IAW their salary cap position. These players are only hurting themselves if they try to drag this out as training camps open soon. Term can be the way to go here as some of these guys should sign a 1 or 2 year term deal to get it done and work for a longer term when the cap increases or a team's cap situation improves. If not then maybe these teams should look to trade them in the spirit of sign and trade. No one is winning here.

FYI other players have SIGNED. A lot of these issues is Dubas fault, he can't sign a contract at a discount. All other hard San Joes had no issues this year, the Jets have been masterful with their younger players and pay the vets (Buff, Wheeler, to a fault Little). The leaf's management is garbage and only knows how to throw money at players. PS the players in the NBA getting the high-end money are high-end players like top ten to fifteen, stop saying ever RFA needs to get paid like the NBA. The NBA rookie pay scale is still capped as well, most ELC players don't help their team and ALOT wash out altogether(As well most rookies don't win in this league). Most NHL teams pay the RFA (passed the 1st round) for years to see if they turn into a prospect. If a GM did his job instead of just handing out dumb ass contracts Sportsnet and TSN tells them to, we would be in a better spot. PS Trouba never got 'Paid" by the Jets and played most of his RFA years here.

NHL didn't expect so many super rookies. Team had them for 3 years at bargain entry level $alaries. Now they have to pay up.

Problem with the NBA comparison is the physicality isn't there nearly as much as NHL. All it takes is a couple injuries or even one severe injury and then you can see potentially millions disappear.

@Michael Demelo I am saying that in defense of longer term deals. Short term deals have risks. More so than they do in the NBA. But thanks for telling me something I already know.
