I recently upgraded my home gaming display to the ASUS PG35Q, but when I saw the LG 38GL950G, I realized that I may have made a HUGE (or some might say an ULTRAWIDE) mistake...

Bad choice Linus. All that ghosting is NOT worth slightly better HDR. And you forgot to mention that the Asus monitor uses that loud ass fan to cool it. No thank you. LG clearly wins here.

The LG being cheaper and having more screen space along with higher resolution wins for me. I felt like he totally missed that in this review. He talked about it being 3" bigger but not much about the resolution, just a couple passing remarks. I think it's a big advantage that the LG display is 3840 x 1600 compared to the Asus one being 3440 X 1440. My one concern was the HDR 400 over the HDR 1000 which I expected to be a drawback on the LG display but I think it is one I can live with because most of the time I'm not using HDR. I been waiting for this to hit retail so I can get one, hopefully it will sell lower than $2k though. Hopefully my EVGA RTX 2080Ti FTW3 Ultra Hybrid can still push high enough FPS at this resolution with highest settings in games. That is my one fear.

Evenly matched, no. At least not in HDR. I've used displays with similar technology (IPS that relies on global dimming to enhance contrast). It's not nice. The problem is the focus is on contrast (i.e. dynamic range) rather than detail. So, in an attempt to emulate specular highlights, such as the light in the cave, you get extreme white clipping and black crush. It gives, especially dark scenes, this weird over/under-exposed hybrid appearance. Basically, it ends up looking really poorly mastered, and you lose a ton of detail over SDR. I personally wouldn't enjoy HDR on this LG.

But those two monitors are worlds apart. The ASUS not only has HDR but it specifically has G-Sync HDR10. Worlds apart. Although none of that means anything if the panel it total crap.
