Didn't find it that hard to follow tbh. Surprised at all the explanation vids and interesting to hear the different takes as people talk their way round the merry carousel

This theory sucks ass. Him fantasising about being with the girl doesn't mean its all fake till the end. Its common sense. The movie explained that it was just that part was fake

Actors and studios who make millions are hilarious making movies about killing the rich. When was the last time I laughed this hard - oh when the giant corporation Amazon made a TV series with an EVIL corporation. Actors, execs, and Amazon can cut out the middle man and kill themselves or give away all their money. Don't hold your breath.

I do actully think the scene where he is laughing while the other's dont is real. I don't think he gets the other jokes, idk. Amazing movie

i feel that if the majority of the movie were to be fake, it'd belittle the message of the movie
                but great breakdown nonetheless!

I think one of the easy ways to understand where things are real / fake is when you can see his shoulder disformity. When it isn't real he is stood with a straight back but when he isn't and is slightly hunched which results in him being awkward in movement

Honestly if it was all just in his imagination that would be really disappointing. It's the worst plot device possible.

This movie was amazing. No flash and bang. Just pure character development.

One thing that Todd Philips did was indirectly weave some of Batman into this standalone film. What is the ongoing theme in the Batman mythos? FEAR.
Think about Red Hood running away in fear only to jump off the ledge and into the chemicals. Because he was afraid. Because of fear, ultimately, he became the Joker.

All of Arthur's actions were done out of fear and defense. The shooting of the trio, stalking the neighbor, talking to Thomas Wayne, needing to find out the truth of his adoption. All of it was motivated by Fear.

As far as the reality/fiction portion: He's been in Arkham since the start of the movie, but he's just retelling/reliving his story to the therapist. (Remember the quick scene at the beginning of him banging his head against the door?) . Everything up to him going to find out he was adopted happened, but very very loosely. He's just putting the panache on it to make himself appear grand before the therapist. He's afraid that he won't be seen as good enough by telling a "boring" story.
The movie truly "ended" in Arkham when he found out he was adopted and abused. Security caught up with him for stealing the file and making the questionable statements to the clerk. The scene at the end where he's talking with the therapist is where it actually resumes the "reality" of it. Everything after that, Murray, escaping the cops, being seen as a hero was ALL imagination. Things he would have LIKED to see. It was at that point he decided to stop being afraid and do what he wanted to do. Sadly, the therapist got it. That's the point where he truly became Joker.

No. The movie showed what was fake and what wasnt. There isnt also a list of fake stuff they choose not to tell.

I don't think that he would fabricate everything, the whole uprising maybe, because he would fantasize about it, but why would he think of the whole adoption thinh and kill his mother, that moment definitely wasn' t a fantasy, which in turn validates beter part of the rest of the movie.

Can we all take a moment to say SORRY for all the real life clowns that make being a clown their job. Seriously think about it for awhile, with stuff like IT and JOKER ( which actually is in favor of rl clowns who do put up with people doing terrible things to them ) coming out people whose job it is to be a clown have been taking hard hits in recent years. So please be a good person and support people whose job it is to be clowns, for when you are in their shoes and have to take punches to YOUR paycheck just because parents get scared of a movie that has a clown in it and then cancel the clown for their child's birthday party or what we see at the hospital. I may get creeped out by some clowns, but I will always stand up for them or anyone whose paychecks are getting hit just because of a movie.

Thomas Wayne did get what he deserved. Consider this: Arthur Fleck, an abused citizen of Gotham living in poverty with a mental condition, an absolute train-wreck. This would’ve been the perfect PR for a mayoral run.

Instead of being a bastich to Arthur, he tells him the truth, offers him his support, all while doing it publicly. His support would skyrocket as he suddenly transforms from the judgemental elitist to the personal saviour of the people of Gotham.

He could’ve used Arthur as an indictment of the current system: an abused child with a mental condition was left for dead, even though his name was in the paper. If Thomas Wayne is elected, this wouldn’t happen.

However, his brashness and inability to empathise ruined his good standing with the public to such an extent that some passer by upon seeing Thomas took out his gun and killed him with his wife.

For me, Arthur is the son of Thomas Wayne, there is some clues in the movie which agree with that...
I saw the movie 3times, 2 in french version and 1 in English. At the end, we see that Arthur laughs, then we see Thomas Wayne and his wife dead, behind Bruce, and then we see Arthur laughs af and says to the woman that she can’t understand :
My opinion is that Thomas Wayne used his power to send Penny in Arkham, and in the same time cross his first son (who is ilegitime) of his life. So, Thomas Wayne is the responsable of the entire pain of Arthur, in addition to the fact that Arthur become the joker.
But the joker is responsible of the death of Thomas Wayne, indirectly, because he don’t planned this death, so ironically, Thomas Wayne, who is the father of Arthur, died because he abandoned his own son (with the creation of the joker, indirectly), Arthur takes revenge for his father, his worst enemy (who is the responsible of the fact that arthur’s life is horrible), without doing anything, and that’s terribly ironic, and he laughs for this, because he win against the man who destroyed his life.

(Sry for the english’s mistakes, I’m French and I already don’t speak english)

                                                                - I saw the movie in French (because... I am), and they say the witnesses saw "a guy in a clown MASK" kill the three men, and Arthur does not where a mask, but make up in the scene we saw.
                                                                - The cops were not here to capture him. Would they run after him, if he was a mass murderer of 6-8 persons, a now known psycho and a dangerous criminal on the run? No, they would kill him while he runs down the stairs.

Arthur's delusions are clearly a product of his medications. He stops hallucinating once he's off his meds. It's interesting because people incorrectly label the Joker as insane but the closer Arthur gets to full Joker, the more lucid, self-aware and confident he becomes (I assume the drugs would be slowly leaving his system too over this period of time).

Todd Phillips didn't realise how controversial giving Joker an origin would be to comic fans so I doubt he intented everything to be a delusion or lie. Like the video says, in true Joker fashion, Arthur is shown to be lacking a true identity as he was adopted (no real name given).

I think it's absoutely refreshing that Todd gave Joker some kind of origin that can't necessarily be labelled as pure fantasy like in The Killing Joke. This movie has revitalised The Joker as a character. '“Phoenix’s Joker brings something that no previous version has had: Humanity.” - Michael Rougheau

I thought it was an essential scene, absolutely poetic and defines Joker and Batman's relationship. The Joker wants Batman to laugh at the absolute absurdity and misery of life that Batman fights against. It foreshadows their relationship as a whole. Arthur cannot get Bruce to laugh.

It's very moving because at this point Arthur just wants to make Bruce laugh at his routine, he doesn't know Thomas will die, he isn't trying to get Bruce to laugh at absurdity but at innocent comedy.

The clocks in these scenes are all the same, its like time never moved nor changed, which makes think even more about the fact that did any of these events in the movie ever took place? And maybe, like what was said in this video, the joke that we wouldn't understand at the end, was any of this real? Or was it all in his head when he was in Arkham?

There are scenes that are absolutely happening, and the scene at the end indicates that he was eventually locked up for what he did. What actually happens when these scenes are playing out is up for debate.
