It’s 4AM Sunday nite July 2019 and I just discovered the Cheddar channel a few hours ago and now I can’t stop watching all their videos! I really gotta go to bed but it’s just too interesting to stop watching!

This reminds me of when I wrote papers with wild assumptions without concrete facts to back up my claims.

Toy sales are a tiny portion of movie income in general. Star Wars is a huge exception. I was looking for more of a breakdown of income from tickets, DVD, TV, etc. The rating is not surprising. The biggest money making movies need kids and adults to watch so PG 13 makes sense.

Please adjust box office figures for inflation, the top 8 changes once you factor that in.

After I hit 17 and could watch pretty much all movies I stopped caring. That being said sometimes I feel the standards of PG 13 to R rated can be a bit inconsistent. Some movies that are PG 13 can still have some strong language and get through but a movie says fuck once and may make a sexual joke then it gets rated R. Sometimes I feel it's inconsistent. Something I've thought about for quite a few years.

                    What they basically mean
                    Pg- Everyone
Pg13- Anyone who ever saw violence is ok
R- Same but with possible nudity
                    Beyond- "adults"

Or maybe Hollywood wanted to play safe for the sake of homogenized PG-13

That you missed a perfect opportunity to use the joke from "Spaceballs" where Yogurt yells out, "Merchandising!", showing off all the "Star Wars" like crap. The joke is even better when you think about it from the perspective that "Star Wars'" merchandise changed the movie game.

mate, who cares about those ratings? PG, PG13, whatever... you watch the movie if it is good, and you don't care about that stupid rating, which is only used in the US.... the rest of the World doesn't even uses it.

I think an issue comes up when you have movies being reduced from R ratings to PG13 to increase sales, despite the fact the content is still befitting of an R-rated film. I saw a spiderman movie as a new teen, the one with the lizard guy that came out less than 10 years ago, and that was rated as PG13 which I would agree matched it's content. But then a while later I had gone to see Cloud Atlas, which was labelled as PG13 for tickets, but it was filled to the brim with content that would be in an R film.

Movies meant for kids get ratings meant for kids so kids can watch them. These kids movies then produce kids merchandise meant for kids. Thanks cheddar that wasnt already obvious on the face of it.

The MPAA is ridiculous, overhauled garbage. It's more valuable to a movie studio for selecting a target audience than it is for parents to be forewarned about the content in a movie.

PG-13 is such a strange idea to me. In Australia we have G, PG, M, M15+, R18+. Only the ratings with numbers (M15+ and R18+) can actually restrict you from the cinema (without a guardian), and M rating may mean some swearing, sex, or violence, but nothing that can't also been seen by kids under 15. But, if a 10-year-old wants to see an R18+ film in the cinema, they can go with a guardian (parent, older sibling, grandparent, etc.) It seems like the US doesn't want kids to see anything.

You really missed an important part of the pie by not mentioning foreign markets. Many movies made in the US are bombastic spectacles without much reliance on plot, character nuance, or cultural reference to time and place because these movies play well in foreign countries. Even with a translation, cultural differences can diminish a movie's impact, but punching bad guys is punching bad guys wherever you go, and US action movies seem to be loved nearly everywhere around the globe.

The studios only have 2 or 3% of the revenue from toys. Toys are expensive to make (factories), and the distribution is also expensive (stores), so they make less money than people think. Obviously 2% of 12 billion is 240 million which still a lot, but they make more money from others merchandising. Disney with Star Wars for example make more money in the Theme Parks.

It’s not common but terminator 2 and robocop were both R films that spawned a toy line. Many other R movies even got a cartoon series like Robocop, the toxic avenger, and others. But that was the 80’ and the height of pop culture overload!

But then, I also remember watching various Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies when I was a kid, despite their R rating (what I don't remember is how much of them were TV-edits and how much were raw home video).
