In Indonesia train is much cheaper than plane. Usually around 1/3 of plane price, some are 1/5 . And train can stop in small towns, so it is very popular. One of them https://youtu.be/zSbop-lER5w

      • Honey! Where is my super suit?

Omg no, Trains from the top of the country to the bottom are waaay more than that. Northern Rail charge about £128 from Manc to London

This video is an apologist video. some random cost applied to the ticket price without telling how did he arrive at that number. The automated cab service will decimate the railway if such reasons are provided, without being honest on how the waste is occurring.
The absurd cost stated in this video
                  1. Cost of coaches/ how often to you buy those? once in 50 years?
                  2. Cost of building rail tracks? how often does that happen? once in 200 years?
                  3. 1 employee for every 4 passengers? that some how sounds sane?
                  4. They need to pay track maintanece. Is that differnt from the road tax? and is tracks more expensive to maintain than roads?

Pretty much everyting points to mismanagement. but it is soon going to be thing of the past once self driving cabs come around. Think how funny this is, cars are getting to a point of self-driving, while trains that go one direction on a track needs 1 employee for 4 passengers.

There are advantages of trains however which is that you can show up 15 maybe 2 minutes before your train arrives get onboard and be able to go through minimal security whereas if i was to merely take a plane from Rotorua to Auckland International (AI) i'd be walking into standard airport security and deal with pretty bad delays since it is the airport serving one of the most toured area's in the country since its soo beautiful and full of history and culture. This is why i support the proposal to link Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga and Wellington via the largest infrastructure project in the nations recent history since it would link over 2 million people in a system that would only take 6 hours. Although such a project would need alot of investment but hopefully some batshit crazy political party with extreme charisma will make it be done

There's a lot more ticket classes on that UK route than what you just listed depending on restrictions. You can also do ticket hacks where instead of getting an A->C ticket you get an A->B ticket and a B->C ticket for the same train to take advantage of price caps for commuter services.

Reduce the staff. For example, meals could be reduced to McDonalds-style pre-cooked and dispensed somehow automatically or by a single person. The major mistake is to treat the train as a restaurant-on-wheels.

or just let them suffer if they decided to stay away from civilization and ''force'' them through prices to move near the cities. I used '' '' because no one is really forcing them, it is just the invisible hand, if they think living in a small village away from cities is better than having cheaper cost for accessing services then so be it. Why should taxpayers pay for people to live in expensive places?

There is a train called the West Coast Express which costs only 12 dollars to get from Vancouver to Mission, British Columbia. That's even less than a Greyhound bus ride (and Greyhound doesn't operate anymore within the province anyway). There are lots of people who travel as well, so it must pay for itself.

Claiming that Airplanes are not subsidized makes me chuckle... I mean yeah, they often don't get money directly. However, excemption of taxes, fees, infrastructure provided for little money, and not penalized external effects like noise, waste etc (which all has to be dealt with when looking at trains)

So in the end, the "true plane" prices would be far higher, most likely alot more expensive than trains with decent support and utilization, like it is in europe.
